Who We Are
Shortly before graduating from Illinois State University, Chris joined the Illinois Department of Public Health in a job that combined his interest in chemistry with that of working for an agency that was concerned about the well-being of people and the environment. He spent time in urban and rural communities helping resolve concerns related to risks associated with exposure to household chemicals and other hazardous materials, along with responding natural and human caused disasters. Through these experiences Chris also learned how the various aspects of public health combined to influence health and well-being in communities.
After completing graduate studies in public health, he and his family moved to Denver where he assumed the role of managing environmental health programs at Tri-County Health Department. Over the course of 16 years, his responsibilities grew, and he was appointed executive director. In that role, Chris developed his understanding of managing a large organization and working with elected officials, community groups, other stakeholders and individuals to find common ground in the resolution of community public health concerns.
In 2000, Chris became the founding president and chief executive officer of the Caring for Colorado Foundation. He viewed this as a capstone on his career of working in communities where he could help direct the Foundation’s resources in response to community identified needs to ensure all residents have the opportunity to live a healthy life. The job brings together many of the things Chris enjoys most – engaging with the great diversity of Coloradans, collaborating with communities, foundations and other organizations, working with a highly competent and motivated staff and board, traveling through the remote areas of Colorado and serving those who are making a difference in their communities.
Throughout his career Chris has also served on a variety of boards and regulatory commissions
In leisure Chris maintains a lifelong love of physical exercise and activity, a healthy love of sports at all levels, and time spent with family, including five grandchildren.
