DENVER - On January, 23, 2105, the Caring for Colorado Board of Directors approved a 5-year, $3.5 million initiative to pilot the Virtual Dental Home in Colorado and a 5-year, $1.65 million grant to continue its support of the Colorado Health Institute.
The Virtual Dental Home Initiative will work to bring access to dental services to low-income, vulnerable and isolated children and seniors throughout Colorado using a hub and spoke model of dentistry. Registered Dental Hygienists will be deployed into community settings to provide preventive dental care and will be linked to a “hub” dentist, via tele-health technology, for assessment and treatment planning. A model such as this expands access to preventive care while it also identifies those with treatment needs and facilitates access to treatment via the hub dental office. The goals of the project are to greatly expand access to care for vulnerable populations and to test a new model of delivering dental care in community settings including schools, Head Start centers, assisted living centers and nursing homes.
“Caring for Colorado remains committed to increasing access to health care and improving health outcomes for the most vulnerable in our state. We know that as many as half of all Coloradans don’t receive routine dental care, especially people from underserved communities. This project strives to address that issue.” said Adele Phelan, Board Chair. To learn more about the Virtual Dental Home Initiative, visit www.caringforcolorado.org.
Additionally, the CFC Board of Directors renewed its commitment to the Colorado Health Institute (CHI), a trusted and leading source of credible health information, data and analysis for Colorado health care leaders.
“As a founding funder of CHI, we are very happy to continue our commitment to support this important organization in Colorado. CHI continues to lead the way in studying and informing healthy policy for our state legislature, health policy leaders and the public” said Chris Wiant, President and CEO of Caring for Colorado.
