Is my organization eligible to apply?
Caring for Colorado will consider applications from organizations that benefit Colorado and are:

  • Colorado organizations classified as tax-exempt under section 501(c)(3).
  • Colorado public agencies, including state and local governments and schools.
  • New or emerging organizations with 501(c)(3) status are permitted to apply through a tax-exempt organization acting as a fiscal sponsor.
    • The fiscal sponsor must maintain full discretion and control over any awarded grant funds and should have the organizational capacity to manage and accept the risks involved with fiscal sponsorship.
    • The project must be aligned with the fiscal sponsor’s charitable mission.
    • The fiscal sponsor’s board must approve the project as furthering the sponsor’s charitable mission before applying for a grant from Caring for Colorado.

Individual funding opportunities may have additional eligibility requirements. This information can be found on specific funding opportunity pages.

Is my organization eligible to apply if we are located outside of Colorado?

Caring for Colorado prioritizes funding for organizations based in Colorado. If an organization based outside of Colorado is doing work that provides a significant benefit to Coloradans, they may be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Can I speak with someone about my idea before I apply?

Caring for Colorado Philanthropy Leads offer virtual meetings and will answer questions over email in the months leading up to an application deadline.

Does Caring for Colorado provide general operating grants?

General operating support is available for most funding opportunities. Grant types and funding ranges will be listed in each funding opportunity announcement.

Does Caring for Colorado provide multiyear grants?

Caring for Colorado provides multiyear grants in many cases, but not all. If you are applying for a multiyear grant, be sure to review the details of individual funding opportunities and speak with a Philanthropy Lead for guidance.

How do I apply for a grant?

Review the resources provided in the funding announcement to verify if your organization is eligible to receive funding from Caring for Colorado and is aligned with an open funding opportunity. If you have additional questions, Philanthropy Leads are available to speak with you prior to the application deadline.

Caring for Colorado’s grant application consists of two parts. Part 1 is an online form that asks for organizational and project information to determine eligibility and alignment with our grantmaking guiding principles and focus areas. Part 1 applicants are either selected to complete Part 2 of the grant application or declined based on this review. Both Part 1 and Part 2 of the application must be submitted online before the deadline to be considered for funding.

What happens between Part 1 and Part 2?

After submitting the Part 1 application, you will receive an email confirmation that the application was received within one business day. Proposals submitted prior to the deadline will not be reviewed early. We thoroughly review every eligible application submitted by the deadline.

All organizations that apply by the deadline will receive an email update on the status of their application once the Part 1 review is finished. If a proposal does not align with the guiding principles or focus areas, applicants will be notified via email. Organizations advancing to further review will be contacted to submit Part 2 of the application.

What happens after I submit Part 2 of my application?

After submitting the Part 2 application, you will receive an email confirmation that the application was received within one business day. Philanthropy team members will schedule a site visit to discuss the proposal as part of the review and may request additional information throughout the process.

Funding recommendations and decisions are made by Caring for Colorado staff and our Board of Directors. We notify all grantees of final decisions via phone or email.

How long does it take to know if I will receive a grant?

The review timeline is either communicated in the funding opportunity announcement or via email after your Part 1 application is submitted.

The length of the review process varies depending on the funding priority for a variety of reasons, including application volume, involvement of community advisory boards, site visit scheduling, and the grant approval process of our board of directors.

Can an organization apply for more than one funding opportunity within a calendar year?

Yes, organizations may apply for multiple Caring for Colorado funding opportunities. We recommend speaking with a member of the Philanthropy Team before applying for multiple funding opportunities.

Can current grantees apply for funding in a different funding priority focus area?

Yes, organizations may apply for multiple Caring for Colorado funding opportunities. We recommend speaking with a member of the Philanthropy Team before applying for multiple funding opportunities.

If my organization’s application is declined, will Caring for Colorado provide reasons for the decision?

Yes. You will receive an email explaining the declination. If necessary, you may contact the staff person identified in the email for additional clarification.

What are Caring for Colorado’s reporting requirements?

Grant reporting is one way we learn about the impact of grantee work. Depending on the funding opportunity, a mid-point check-in or interim report and final report may be requested. For most funding opportunities, both oral and written reports are accepted. Full details about the reporting requirements are detailed in the online Fluxx portal when a grant is awarded. Review an example final report. (link to come)
