Reproductive Health Equity

Purpose

Expanding and improving sexual and reproductive equity across Colorado so that all Coloradans, especially those who have been historically marginalized and underrepresented, have autonomy and power to make informed decisions about their sexual and reproductive health, rights, and well-being.

Why We Care

We believe all Coloradans, no matter who they are or where they live in the state, should have the information and services they need to make informed and timely decisions about their health and well-being.

Sexual and reproductive health is directly tied to a person’s health and well-being. Medically accurate information and culturally relevant services are essential in supporting all Coloradans, especially young people and adults, to make decisions about their bodies, relationships, and futures. This includes whether and when to use contraception, start a family, or continue a pregnancy.

Our Approach

ReproCollab is an initiative of Caring for Colorado that advances reproductive equity in Colorado. Achieving reproductive equity requires the collective efforts of diverse partners to protect and expand reproductive and sexual health across the life course.

Informed by the reproductive justice movement, we understand that reproductive equity happens in the broad context of intersecting issues, including race, gender, and structural and social influences on health and bodily autonomy. We seek to change power dynamics to ensure that all people have equitable access to resources, information, and services and the power they need to determine their sexual and reproductive goals.

ReproCollab engages funders, clinicians, researchers, community organizations, and grassroots leaders to improve reproductive healthcare, strengthen advocacy efforts, and develop leadership for reproductive health equity in Colorado.

We center the lived experiences, assets, and needs of communities that have historically been denied access to resources and information to determine their sexual and reproductive goals. ReproCollab approaches its work through grantmaking, building partnerships, and convening partners across three intersecting strategic areas:

  • Protect and Expand Contraceptive Access
  • Promote Community-Led Solutions in Sexual Health Education
  • Lead and Advocate for Reproductive Equity

In addition, our Choose When initiative provides grants to safety net clinics to support access to contraceptive care in communities with a high proportion of uninsured and underinsured individuals and where contraceptive care is limited.

Our Focus Areas

Protect and Expand Contraceptive Access

The goal of ReproCollab’s Protect and Expand Contraceptive Access efforts is to improve access to person-centered contraceptive care within Colorado’s healthcare safety net. This means that all patients have access to contraceptive care that meets their individual preferences, needs, history, and conditions within and outside the four walls of the exam room.

Person-centered contraceptive care requires a robust network of providers and clinic staff trained in counseling for and providing all forms of contraception. This allows an individual to make the best healthcare decisions for their sexual and reproductive health.

ReproCollab’s funding supports efforts to transform primary care practices to foster culturally responsive, affordable, confidential, and timely contraceptive care in partnership with Upstream USA, a national nonprofit specializing in reproductive care.

Promoting Community-Led Solutions in Sexual Health Education

ReproCollab promotes community-led solutions in sexual and reproductive health education for young people. We accomplish this through our community-led initiative, SOMOS (Spanish for “we are”), which cultivates new forms of communication between young Latinas and the adults in their lives.

SOMOS addresses vital life issues, including reproductive and sexual health, and has been incubated by Caring for Colorado since 2019. We developed SOMOS using a human-centered design process focused on Latina youth and their caregivers. SOMOS is now a Latina-led movement that gathers the Latino community to have meaningful conversations with young people about important issues in their lives that can be tricky to navigate and talk about.

ReproCollab expanded SOMOS in 2023, aiming to reach more Latinas in Pueblo and Adams counties through a partnership with Vuela for Health, a respected community-based organization. Our vision is that SOMOS continues to grow and reach Latina youth and their families across the state to address the gap in culturally responsive and community-led sexual health education programming.

Lead and Advocate for Reproductive Equity

The goal of ReproCollab’s advocacy strategy is to leverage community, regulatory, legislative, and philanthropic expertise to create public policies that advance reproductive equity. We do this by supporting an interconnected field of advocates, nurturing emerging leaders, and supporting reproductive rights and equity policies in Colorado.

Our advocacy partners represent diverse communities and use a variety of policy advocacy approaches, including public policy, regulations, and financing. As one of the few initiatives in the state dedicated solely to advocacy efforts to protect reproductive rights, ReproCollab supports key movement leaders in building and strengthening a reproductive equity network.

Choose When aims to ensure that all contraceptive methods are affordable for all Coloradans. By offering grants to safety net clinics across the state, Choose When eases the financial burden on individuals who are uninsured or underinsured or require confidential services. This ensures that contraception is available at no cost to the patient.
