Safety health net clinics improving access to contraceptive care in 38 counties

Contraception is a covered benefit in health insurance plans. However, for people who are underinsured or lack insurance, the out-of-pocket costs to access contraception can be too much. Safety net health clinics that serve these individuals and those with other barriers to care operate on a thin financial margin. They need financial support to be able to provide the full range of contraception methods to their patients. This is where Choose When comes in.

Funded by private philanthropy and individual donors, Choose When provides grants to safety net health clinics to cover the costs of contraception for people with financial barriers to care.

Through our first Choose When funding opportunity, Caring for Colorado recently awarded 24 grants totaling $600,000 to safety net health clinics serving people in 38 counties throughout the state. You can read more about our grant recipients here.

Choose When was a regional program that began in 2016 in Northwest Colorado and was transferred to Caring for Colorado in October 2023 to grow the program into a statewide solution. Caring for Colorado has adopted the Choose When model of individual and foundation fundraising to offset the costs of contraception, including long-acting reversible methods, for people with financial barriers to care.

As part of the intent to scale Choose When statewide, Caring for Colorado committed to providing additional funding, some specified by individual donors, for the original region. Continued funding was awarded to Northwest Colorado Health, where Choose When funding has helped over 400 women in the Yampa Valley access cost-prohibitive contraceptives in the last seven years. “It is so exciting to see such a powerful homegrown program be expanded across the state,” said Stephanie Einfeld, chief executive officer of Northwest Colorado Health. “A network of providers administering this program can lead to learning from each other on best practices of women’s health and family planning, thus benefiting the health outcomes of our patients and community members.”

“For women’s health, the right to choose when to become pregnant promotes better health outcomes and improved self-sufficiency rates. This expansion can shine a light on the positive impacts that occur when women’s health services are made affordable for all, regardless of ability to pay.”

– Stephanie Einfeld, chief executive officer of Northwest Colorado Health
